“Love can be exploited, I guess, used to manipulate. It's leverage. But I would never call loving someone else a weakness. I think living without love at all, any kind of love, is weakness. And the worst kind of darkness.”

Victory comes at a price. Mare Barrow learned this all too well when Cal’s betrayal nearly destroyed her. Now determined to protect her heart—and secure freedom for Reds and newbloods like her—Mare resolves to overthrow the kingdom of Norta once and for all… starting with the crown on Maven’s head. But no battle is won alone, and before the Reds may rise as one, Mare must side with the boy who broke her heart in order to defeat the boy who almost broke her. Cal’s powerful Silver allies, alongside Mare and the Scarlet Guard, prove a formidable force. But Maven is driven by an obsession so deep, he will stop at nothing to have Mare as his own again, even if it means demolishing everything—and everyone—in his path. War is coming, and all Mare has fought for hangs in the balance. Will victory be enough to topple the Silver kingdoms? Or will the little lightning girl be forever silenced? In the epic conclusion to Victoria Aveyard’s stunning series, Mare must embrace her fate and summon all her power… for all will be tested, but not all will survive.
I'm not so sure how to start with this.
First of all, it took me more than 2 months (1 month was too much, let alone 2!!!) to finish this book. I get it, the first three books were slow and some parts were dull, but I wasn't expecting War Storm to be the worst! I almost abandoned it! I was so bored and started skipping dragging parts.
So here's what I thought:
> Jon said to "Rise, and Rise alone". Which part of War Storm showed Mare rising alone? She was always with the Scarlet Guard, or paired up with Kilorn, or Tyton. She's always with Farley or Ella or Davidson. The only moment she "rose" was when she killed Maven. But I was expecting more than that, I was expecting a fight where she was the star, or where she saves a big portion of Norta. The war in Corvium was way better than the final war in Norta. At least in Corvium, we saw Mare and a lot of people (Farley, Cal, even Evangeline) got their hands dirty and actually helped win the fight!
> Volo Samos just died like that. So Aveyard painted us a picture of Volo being this supreme king, he's lethal, scary to his children, scary to his people. His words were power. And yet for someone to be strong and skilled, he just died like that. We did not even see a glimpse of the power and skill he had. I was waiting for a fight where Volo will finally show his true skill, where this hard shell of a man will show us what's beneath his armor.
>From Red Queen to War Storm, Kilorn was just a side show. He was like an assistant, a right hand man who did not have any chance of participating in anything. He was literally on the sides all the time. Together with Mare, running with Mare, helping Mare. I don't have anything else to say about Kilorn. He just didn't do anything.
>Evangeline. Yep she's still awesome and I love her. But to give her character an ending like that? It's just unfair! So yeah it's a given that she's going to Montfort with Elane, together with Ptolemus and Wren. But what happens after? After they leave Norta, when they arrive in Motfort, what's to happen to these two especially now that their father died, their mother run away??? I know they can handle their selves, but at least show us what's to happen to them. Also to Elane and Evangeline who now can be together in Montfort.
> CAL. Well that f**k he changed his mind. But Maven was never wrong about Cal, he couldn't decide for himself. This series started and ended with Cal not deciding for himself. I actually believe that if he did not read his mother's diary, he wouldn't change his mind at all. So yet again, Cal had a reason (and it was his mom) why he changed courses at the end.
>As for the ending of this series: uhm that's it? There are a lot of loopholes, room for improvement, a lot of potential. I still believe that the story is good, but the writing, the execution was not so.
All in all, i would give the whole series 3/5 stars. Some parts were really good, I really liked the story and I still believe that it could have been better. But the dullness, slowness, the tedious feeling of reading the books, was just too much. If you're looking for an action-packed, can't stop reading, can't get your hands off, kind of book, this is NOT it.
Have fun reading!
