“Now I'm in a king's cage. But so is he. My chains are Silent Stone. His is the crown.”
Synopsis:
In this breathless third installment to Victoria Aveyard’s bestselling Red Queen series, allegiances are tested on every side. And when the Lightning Girl's spark is gone, who will light the way for the rebellion? Mare Barrow is a prisoner, powerless without her lightning, tormented by her lethal mistakes. She lives at the mercy of a boy she once loved, a boy made of lies and betrayal. Now a king, Maven Calore continues weaving his dead mother's web in an attempt to maintain control over his country—and his prisoner. As Mare bears the weight of Silent Stone in the palace, her once-ragtag band of newbloods and Reds continue organizing, training, and expanding. They prepare for war, no longer able to linger in the shadows. And Cal, the exiled prince with his own claim on Mare's heart, will stop at nothing to bring her back. When blood turns on blood, and ability on ability, there may be no one left to put out the fire—leaving Norta as Mare knows it to burn all the way down.
Before I share my thoughts, I have come upon one small thing in this book. So to those who have read the book, you've come across Egg and Trio. (to those who haven't, their the Arvent guards who kept Mare in line). What intrigued me was not who they are or what they do, but what their real names are. Ring a bell?? Egg is named Kaz while Trio is Brecker. So to an ordinary reader, these are just random names. But nope, this did not pass by me so easily. Kaz and Brecker, if you would add them up, Kaz Brecker, is the infamous Kaz in the Six of Crows duology! Yep!! Just like what happened to me while reading WARCROSS (ready my review), I totally felt like the names were familiar, like I've heard it before. It actually amazed me! Coincidence or not, I was super excited. It is indeed true that the stories stay in our lives especially the characters, and they do not just leave us after the story has ended.
So moving on, I'll keep this short, (like my temper when reading this book)
It's exciting that King's Cage started right where Glass Sword ended!
I love the fact that Cal and Mare finally got good scenes together. I mean, yes they were together in Glass Sword but they were always bickering, with hateful stares and blaming eyes. I also liked that we finally got to see the Cal we loved in Red Queen. The brave and intelligent prince, always thinking, always calculating, all for the love of his life. He's the prince, he'll always be, and yes he's brave and courageous, but sometimes being a simple person is enough. But Cal was raised as a prince, and I bet it's really hard for him those final moments in the book.
I also love Mare in this book. She was brave and independent and I do not blame her for being cautious and traumatized. After everything she's been through, all the horrors and nightmares, the ugly king she was forced to forget, the lies she saw and the people she couldn't save, I adore her for still joining the cause and standing strong. How easy it would be to just be selfish and stay with her family, to let other fight and just stay safe with her people. But Mare, though hesitant and always second guessing the people around her, is just a brave and willful person, and no one will stop her from going after everyone who will cause trouble.
I'm wondering why Cameron got a POV and Cal didn't, or even Maven. How come Cameron's thoughts were more important than the Calore brothers? I get why Evangeline got her own. It's imperative that we understand her thoughts, that we know the girl behind all the cold-blooded image. Her steel may be strong and impenetrable, but she's got a soft heart with a weakness for her loved ones. But Cameron? All she does is put blame on other people, to point out their short comings, or their weaknesses. She may have understood Mare at some point and learned to be civil with Cal, but to be a brat at all times until she got her brother? That's way out of line and bordering on rudeness. She may be right with her allegations, they may be all wrong, but they still protected her and kept her safe. The least she could do was keep her mouth shut and let the others do the fighting. Her twin brother's outright dislike to the likes of her was like a slap to her face, one that was well deserved. She got a taste of her own medicine and that's just right.
Another issue I have with Cameron, her inability to be civil with Cal at first got me thinking of the infamous phrase "the more you hate the more you love." I promised myself that if Cameron somehow crossed an imaginary line with Cal, I swear i'll abandon this book in an instant. I'm really not okay with Cameron. Yeah she's fierce, yeah she's accepted her gift, but to be ungrateful to the people who saved her and kept her from damnation, is just beyond me!
The book's inability to keep up with the pacing and excitement really bothered me. I felt like riding a roller coaster ride while I read this. One would think that that's a good thing, but in this case no it's not. I'm just wondering why can't the book be exciting and thrilling, it's hard to get hooked to something especially when it's not mind-boggling as expected it to be. I read this for a total of 3 weeks, on and off, because I couldn't stand the dullness of most parts. I mean, it started off really good, and it was intense, but slowly the story became tedious
Overall, I still liked the book but not enough to go crazy over it. There are just those types, you don't love it but you don't specifically hate it too. I would recommend it to those patient readers, who loves enough YA and has a lot of time on their hands! (since it took me a while before I was able to finally finish this)
Till my next review!
Happy reading!!
